This weeks blog is from Lucy Drummond at SG Venues. She give us her thoughts on the MICE industry after having a complete career change.
Having left my career in the food manufacturing industry to have my third child 8 years ago, I thought my career life was over. Then 3 years ago through a friend of a friend, (as the saying goes “it’s not what you know it’s who you know”!!) I ended up working for Sam at SG Venues in Venue Finding and Event Management and I’ve never looked back.
It was tough getting through the initial industry jargon “MICE” (not a furry friend as I first thought) “DMC” and “DDR”!! but when I did I found a real passion and buzz for the industry and the clients we look after.
I love the challenge of a new proposal, venue finding, getting the proposal together, visiting the venue and SIGNING THAT CONTRACT!!! It’s all about PEOPLE.
Meeting suppliers, visiting and learning about their venues and destinations is key in ensuring we find the right venue for our clients…. there’s nothing like first hand experience to understand what they have to offer. I have been lucky enough to be taken to Copenhagen (we even arrived on rib boats!) and the fabulous city of Dublin in the last few months and each trip was invaluable for my knowledge and I have met some amazing people in the process too.
I would recommend this industry to anyone and wish I found it sooner – but better late than never
